Google courted controversy last week by experimenting with ads in its Google Home product. Naturally there was an uproar from users, but it's an interesting experiment that raises important questions around Google Home business models.
As detailed in a research paper published by OpenAI this week, Mordatch and his collaborators created a world where bots are charged with completing certain tasks, like moving themselves to a particular landmark. The world is simple, just a big white square—all of two dimensions—and the bots are colored shapes: a green, red, or blue circle. But the point of this universe is more complex. The world allows the bots to create their own language as a way collaborating, helping each other complete those tasks.
In an effort to usher in more innovation with AI, Y Combinator is going to try an experiment in the upcoming batch: a vertical group in YC dedicated to AI companies.
The program will have a few domain-specific perks such as:
- Office hours with engineers experienced in ML to help overcome technical challenges.
- Extra cloud compute credits for GPU instances.
- Special talks by leaders in the field.
Amazon last week announced that it’s bringing its Alexa voice assistant to its main shopping app on iOS. The company says Alexa will hit the Amazon app starting 3/16, with a full rollout expected to be completed by sometime this week.
